Bright Kids Cards privacy notice for children
Version 2026-10-07. Bright Kids Cards is run by Corey Mullin, 15015 Avenue of Science, San Diego, CA 92128. Questions or requests: [email protected].
Who uses Bright Kids Cards
A parent or legal guardian creates the account and adds their children. Children never create accounts, and never give an email address, password, photo, location, or contact details.
What we collect about children, and why
- First name or nickname and age, entered by the parent, so the child can find their profile and so cards match their level.
- Cards the child or parent makes (words, questions, answers), and any pictures added to cards.
- Scanning a page (a photo or PDF of a spelling list or worksheet): the page is read on the phone or computer itself and is never uploaded or kept; only the cards made from it are saved.
- Answers and practice time (right, missed, when), to choose which cards to review, award badges, and show progress to the parent.
- Voice recordings, only if a parent records their own voice reading a card. We never record children.
- “Say it!” (off unless a parent turns it on for a child): while the child taps the microphone to read a word aloud, the phone or browser’s own speech recognition (Apple in Safari, Google in Chrome and Edge) turns their voice into text so the app can check the word. Bright Kids Cards receives only that text, uses it to check the answer, and does not record or keep the child’s voice or the text.
- Settings such as the reading voice, screen language, colors, avatar and reading-help choices.
We use this information only to run Bright Kids Cards for your family. We do not show ads, build profiles for advertising, sell or rent information, or let children talk to other people.
Sharing a deck
A parent can choose to share a deck by link. The link shows only that deck’s card text, never a child’s name, answers, recordings or pictures. Parents can stop sharing at any time, and the link then stops working.
Teachers and classes
A teacher can create a teacher account to make classes and assign word lists. Teachers can’t add children or see any child on their own. A parent may choose to join their own child to a class by entering the teacher’s class code and agreeing to share. From then on the teacher sees only the child’s first name or nickname and the child’s practice on the lists that teacher assigned (how many words are ready, which are still tricky, and the last day practiced). The teacher never sees the child’s age, the family’s own decks, recordings, other activity, or the parent’s email. Lists the teacher assigns are copied into the child’s decks. A parent can leave the class at any time in Grown-ups → Children; the teacher then stops seeing that child, and the child keeps the lists. We don’t use class information for anything else.
Emails to parents
We email the parent to confirm their account and permission, to reset a password, and (unless turned off) a weekly progress summary. Every weekly email has a one-click link to stop them.
If a parent turns on daily reminders, we send a notification to the phones or computers they choose, with a child’s first name and how many cards are waiting. It travels through the device maker’s notification service (Apple, Google or Mozilla) encrypted, so they can’t read it. Turn reminders off at any time in Grown-ups → Account.
Reviews of the app
A parent or teacher can rate Bright Kids Cards and leave a comment (Grown-ups → Account). It is private to the people who make the app unless the parent ticks “You may show my review” and we approve it; then the stars, comment and the name the parent chose appear on our sign-up and sign-in pages. We never show an email address. Please don’t put children’s names in a review. Edit or delete your review there at any time; deleting your account deletes it too.
Who else handles it
Service providers that run the app for us, under contracts that limit them to that purpose: our cloud hosting and database provider, our email provider (for parent emails only). The reading voice runs on our own servers, or on your device.
Your rights as a parent
- See it: Grown-ups → Account & privacy → “Download all our data”.
- Delete it: delete a child (Grown-ups → Children) or your whole account (Grown-ups → Account & privacy). Deletion is permanent and includes recordings and uploaded files.
- Stop collection: delete the child’s profile, or contact us. You can also ask us to do any of this by email at [email protected].
How long we keep it
For as long as your account is open. When you delete a child or your account, we delete their information from our systems; backups roll off within 30 days.
Consent
When you sign up you confirm you are the child’s parent or guardian and agree to this notice; you then confirm by clicking the link we email you. Children can’t be added until that is done.
